Bruce Barron - Explorer

Bruce Barron organized and led the Barron Pickard Heath River Expedition which discovered the source of the Heath. The expedition's objective was to follow Colonel Fawcett's footsteps, to explore the headwaters, to discover the Heath River source and to make the first river descent.

1n 1986 Barron found a dilapidated copy of Exploration Fawcett at a remote wildlife research camp in Peru's Amazon Basin. Facinated, he read the book straight through the night in a heavy storm. The camp was in the general area of the Heath River and when he discovered that no one had explored the river since Fawcett's expedition in 1910, and that the source had not been discovered, he became obsessed with the idea of putting an exploration team together. It took him ten years to organize the 1996 Barron Pickard Heath Expedition. He worked with the Royal Geographical Society in London researching Fawcett’s original maps and journals and in Peru with biologists, anthropologists, missionaries, river guides, the Ese’eja Native tribe, the Peruvian government and any others from which he could gain information.

Bruce Barron is a professional expedition guide, explorer and photographer. He has guided cultural, adventure travel, and climbing expeditions for 30 years to the remote corners of the planet. Barron has led numerous expeditions to the remote jungles, forests and deserts around the globe as well as successful ascents to the summits of countless peaks, such as: Denali, Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn etc.. He has explored virgin areas in the Andes, Himalayas and Amazon Basin, and West Papua.

“We have been on half rations for more than two weeks. The last few days our meals have consisted of one small cup of mixed freeze-dried food and fish broth in the morning and one cup in the evening. We are weak from hunger, and by each afternoon, light headed and dizzy. Today we supplemented our diet with rehydration salts and throat lozenges from the medical kit. Fortunately our mammoth 100-pound packs have been reduced to 45 for the last week. Now, on the final day, we have cut down our loads to bare essentials for our last attempt to discover the source of the Heath.”
